  Carnival/Black and White

This carnival started up on 6 January 1912 in the city of Pasto in Colombia. The locals began to play with women’s face powder shouting “Long live the whites and the blacks” in a city where there were few blacks living.
In the department of Cauca in 1607 the black slaves were given the day off on the 5 January after an uprising when they painted the walls black to show that they existed. Now the carnival has expanded to include dance groups and floats of different sizes made of papier maché built around Andean myths and the latest creations of the local artisans.
In 2001 the Black and White Carnival was declared part of the country’s cultural heritage.
