  Old people

Tired of being a burden for their children a group of elderly people got together and formed a group called the AWICHAS (Aymara for grandmothers). Now there are around 120 members divided into four groups. Two have their own house where they share the daily chores and have set up theatre groups and sports activities. The group receives support from volunteers working with different NGOs. Couples have come together through the group – Elia and Mariano are one. Mariano caught Elia’s eye as he played her his mandolin and they decided to get married, despite some comments from others in the group. Their marriage was blessed by the Catholic Church and the Aymara gods during a ceremony led by a Yatiri (traditional healer).
