Lake Titikaka is the most important source of fish on the Altiplano. The people from Omasuyos are expert fishermen and boat builders and are a symbol of the region. Up until 50 years ago the fishermen set sail in totora reed boats and used hand-made nets to fish but now small motorboats and nylon nets are frequently seen on the Lake, which makes for a bigger catch.
These fishermen have watched as the Lake’s fish such as Boga, Suche and others have disappeared over time wiped out by foreign species, Pejerrey and Trout, introduced into the Lake by various cooperation agencies.
