Popayan-Procession and Tradition
The Holy Week processions in Popayan in the south of Colombia stretch back for over 400 years, since 1566. Until now the right to carry one of the statues has been handed down from father to son and is considered to be a great privilege.
Over the years, the Holy Week processions in Popayán have become ever more lavish thanks to statues brought from Spain and Quito, Ecuador where the artists are inspired to represent the different stages of the Passion of Christ.
These processions were declared Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in September 2009. |
