The Afro-Bolivian community first arrived as slaves to work in the silver mines of Potosí and then were taken to work on the coca plantations in the region of Los Yungas, where they live today. With the Agrarian Reform 50 years ago they were given lands and still farm and sell coca leaves and citrus fruits on the local market. The main community of Tocana celebrates the Virgin of the Candelaria on 17 August each year and those who have migrated to the cities return to celebrate this feast day. A mass is celebrated, the virgin processes around the town and the traditional music and dancing “saya” begins….
